Golf Coach of the Year: Kelly Broussard

Updated 12:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 21, 2011

Smithson Valley golf coach Kelly Broussard

School: Smithson Valley

Age: 53

Head coaching experience: Past two seasons at Smithson Valley; just finished 32nd year coaching various sports Looking back on 2010-11 Broussard had a full cupboard returning, but instead of coasting, Broussard and the Rangers stormed to state.

With freshman Megan Woods filling out the five-team roster, Broussard's girls team dominated the area en route to Austin, taking second in the Region IV-4A tournament by just six shots to eventual state runner-up Austin Lake Travis.

Once in Austin, the Rangers didn't buckle under the pressure, capturing the bronze for the girls program's first state medal.

To illustrate Smithson Valley's dominance, all five of the players on Broussard's girls team were named Express-News All-Area. And that doesn't include District 27-4A overall medalist Johany Rivera. Broussard opted to keep this fab five together for regionals and state, thus allowing Rivera to compete for individual honors.

Led by Kirby Gorzell, Broussard's boys team finished fourth at the regional tournament after losing to Alamo Heights by one stroke at district.

Also considered for the E-N honor: Churchill's Randy Spivey
